new scribbles

School has started for me again and this means less time to draw the fun stuff. (sigh) Although, I am taking an Illustration Techniques class that seems like fun. I'm excited about that class because they let you draw cartoony stuff. I couldn't get away with that in other classes. They seem to frown upon the cartoony art at my college. (sigh) Here's a preview of the first project I'm doing in that class. I'm actually going to attempt to draw a background, I figure it will just be a simple beach scene, but I'm open to suggestions. I really don't want the bg to distract anything from the hula girl.

....Some more doodles and scribbles I've done since my last post.

Well, I totally wasted my 3 day weekend and I have über homework to finish up.

Heya Kristen.
I've been trying to get this to you.
I've posted it on drawingboard here:

I imagine you'll like it very much.

Sorry, but I have a very poor notion of how American colleges work. On a previous post, you mentioned not taking any art classes. What is your college course and how old are you? I studied in a Brazilian school (which explains my crappy English) which has a curriculum directed to parents who wish their children to live and study abroad (preferably US). I recall one of my teachers recommending me a Liberal Arts course, allowing me to have two years more to choose "a serious course".

By the photos of yourself, I assume you are about 18. I´m also a big fan of the very young Katie Rice(23) who worked in Spumco (Ren & Stimpy). What or who are your biggest drawing influences?

There is a link from that image to more of her work.
You should go have a look.

How old are you again?
These are lovely. I give you an A.

Ah, Kristen, once again a gaze on your drawings with awe and admiration! ;c )
I wish my drawings had the loosy-fluidishness (you like that word?) that yours have!
Of course I love the hairdo chick, and also the big-girl with the soft drink in her hand. I think I know her!

R.T.Inoue: I'm 25 and still in college. Yup.. it's kinda sad isn't it? Oh well. I moved from from Arizona to Missouri last summer and I had many many many problems with most of my art classes (from the Jr college in Arizona) not transferring to the new college in Missouri. I didn't take any art classes last spring because I wasn't too sure which art classes I needed because of all my transferring problems. I'm getting a degree in graphic design (even though I terrible at it) and illustration. It's crazy. I don't know what I'm getting myself into. I wish I was like Peter Pan and didn't have to grow up. I wish I could have stayed a kid forever.

Elliot: I went to that link. I adore all the drawings in the "Alice" section. Beautiful stuff!

Neneuche Thank you Sarah. So far, school is A-Okay. I'm 25 (aren't you 25 too?) I love your new haircut, just saw the photo.

Carolyn: Thank you Carolyn! And yes I love that word! Your drawings most definitely have all that and then some! I especially love the expression on your Aug 23rd post, the one titled "My Glamorous Job" the expression on her/your face is priceless.

Academics are such unnecessary snobs. When I was taking theatre they renounced anything musical. Yeah, so Andrew Lloyd Webber's not-so-great, but you can't tell me that Sondheim, or Weil weren't a wee bit influential.
Same goes for your stuff. Your little sketches are beautiful. You have an obvious grasp of the human form, and your shading is drop dead gorgeous. Who cares if it approaches "cartoony" if it is obviously skilled and demonstrates a thorough understanding of the elements of art and design. I can draw realistically just fine, but I have trouble condensing that into something simpler, and more stylized. I am in awe of your ability to be both so personal in style, and technically proficient at the same time.
Screw 'em.

Great batch of sketches Kristen! I like the sketch you have planned for your painting, can't wait to see it done.

I think a beach bg is a good idea. You want something simple, and that keeps the focus on the character. Try to think in terms of all elements (be they beach, water, palm tree, or whatever) leading towards the character. You want everything in the bg to support the focus (your character) and not distract from it. Hope that made sense.
